FIRST GRADE

At Cornerstone Christian School, our First Grade program builds upon foundational skills to foster academic, social, and spiritual growth. Core subjects and enrichment activities are taught with a Christ-centered focus, helping students grow in knowledge and faith.

Bible

• Students study Creation and key Old Testament figures.

• Lessons include the life and ministry of Jesus, connecting biblical teachings to everyday life.

• Weekly Bible verse memorization strengthens their understanding of God’s Word.

Language Arts

• Focus on phonics, word recognition, and reading comprehension strategies.

• Emphasis on building reading fluency and understanding through guided practice.

• Weekly spelling tests reinforce vocabulary and phonics skills.

• Writing skills are developed through engaging, age-appropriate activities.

Math

• Exploration of foundational concepts such as fact families, word problems, and double-digit addition.

• Introduction to money, time, fractions, geometry, and measurement.

Science

• Students view creation through a biblical lens, exploring God’s work in the natural world.

• Topics include mammals, fish, birds, insects, seasons, plants, gardening, and weather.

• Hands-on experiments and group projects, including an animal habitat diorama, encourage active learning.

Social Studies

• Students learn about their community, California, the United States, and the world.

• Lessons cover notable Americans who shaped our nation and fought for freedoms.

Enrichment Classes

• Weekly opportunities include Music, Physical Education, seasonal arts and crafts, Computer, Library, STEM, and Spanish.

• Special activities like daily prayer, weekly chapel, and Bible verse memorization help students grow spiritually.
